A little Linux distro including emacs + swi-prolog

Hi, Just in the week before Christmas, https://extix.se did publish his new compact distro based on Ubuntu coming rel. Noble Numbat (the future 24.04, a coming LTS supp. until the end of this decennary). The first experience is, after you did find how to connect to the web (read the given infos!), is fantastic. And, surprise, this distro offers a great choice of editors. One of those is emacs! Dingelingeling: emacs <> swi-prolog! Yesterday, I did have to start a big update, my first one since begin. I did found, that it could be use to complete this torso of distribution with a lot of good things to spend time together or not in the family for young and old persons. And I did grow the torso to a complete very small distro for young and old. I did p[preserve only the refractainstaller and as I did see that webkit is preinstalled, I did replace firefox by the actual luakit, and spare so a lot of memory. And I did add, add a lot to include a full office based on Gnome (abiword, gimp, gnumeric, magicpoint xsane, tesseract-ocr, gimagereader) and more like light distros are using to propose (mhwaveedit, mtpaint as I don’t want to change my own habits, to make printscreen, crop and adapt the resolution and size, osmo) then I did begin to offer more to the family.

it was of course swi-prolog for the older one and ucb-logo for the younger (the books of Brian Harvey are free on the web), and for all the new darktable 64 for pictures, nted for music sheets, marble-qt to inspect the earth and find ways for bikers etc.

the actual iso size is 2.1 … 2.3 GB (where my home language, German, is included; but you can start the iso in each language!). This is an extremely low size for completely new stuff in 64 bit! And this size starts WILLING on a lot of modern or not PC’s having a good RAM (my PC, having 8 GB RAM, is old). And, if you like it, you can install it in a few minutes (permitting to select an other language)!

I would like to offer the ISO with the integrated SWI prolog environment with emacs to other. It can start (with enough RAM) directly out the RAM without some installation and without some change at all on the PC! An Idea, where I can find a free upload for my ISO without disadvantage for the users?

Could instead provide e.g. a BASH script to perform your additional setup on an already-available ISO (after it’s installed, of course).

Hi brebs, I could work to do that but it is not done for this version… But you can try to download the snapshot iso at this link extix-23.11-64bit-lxqt-1.4-refractasnapshot-20231224_1330.iso - pCloud. after you have the iso, write it please with «dd» on a stick. I use 4 or 8 GB USB cards or sticks after having (re)create the drive table in gparted (Linux) and format then as vfat16 system. if needing, umount it and set the boot flag (gparted again). Now you can burn and it will work. Take care to do that on the right drive (my linux opens each new drive connected so I know so which drive is the new drive! Before I can continue, I have to unmount it but I can’t use a wrong drive. In dd use the drive number, not the partition number (for ex.

dd if=/home/user/download/iso2burn.iso of=/dev/sdb status=progress

) and all with success. Reboot now and you can start the new iso in divers modes or change the language before to do that and then, start.

Note: the use is the same as on extix.se! same user (user), same user password (live or root for root) and same ways of connection with the web (see the text and the pictures from exton)

Personally, I run Void Linux with icewm - very lightweight.

There is quite a security risk with installing an ISO that 1 stranger has created. A script would be immensely more trustworthy.

Of course, and I am supporter of your opinion (I am really one of the oldest user of SliTaz, the distro made from nothing and totally independent. The creator did explain in a book in French, at this time he did not speak English at all, how he did do it step by step. And I was adept of NuTyx as long he did propose to build themself LinuxFromScratch automatised but entirely on the target computer. I did do it more than one time as it was possible, about 15 y. ago. But soon, you will to have to accept that it is not possible to do all alone because you stop so each chance of more development and efficiency. And you will have to spend ALL YOUR OWN TIME to repeat works already done and better since a long time to get then in your environment!

I did treat extensively that thematic here

and here

my own new derivative: Just:Ceres / Devuan Derivatives / Dev1 Galaxy Forum .

Yes,

if

you have a immensely more trustworthy BASE you often only need a long unique command

apt install pipapo papipy papupy popopa etc.

an half page full of package names, to build your distro by yourself an not by 1 stranger.

but what was the story with the most secure browser at all (xxxterm alias xombrero)? It did disappear completely, did be erased years later from the depositories (all, excepted divers little distros) because of heavy lacks of security? how will you protect yourself? oh! ok! I see, safer sex, I renounce…
